Fox Glacier Weather and Cancellations

Fox Glacier weather: what each operator does when rain or cloud stops the helicopters, the weather call, the best time of year, and how cold it is on the ice.

Updated November 2026

Weather decides every trip onto Fox Glacier. The Department of Conservation (DOC) says the national park can have heavy rain at any time of year, up to 5 m of it annually, and every helicopter trip runs subject to the weather on the day. Fox Glacier Guiding makes its final weather call 10 minutes before departure and refunds a trip it cancels in full, or moves it to another departure, and it advises booking your first day in Fox Glacier. Its heli-hike, Fox Glacier: Up to 3 Hours Hike with Helicopter Transfer, is from US$479 a person (checked November 2026).

What each operator does when it cannot fly

OperatorThe weather callIf it cannot fly
Fox Glacier Guiding, heli-hikesFinal call 10 minutes before departure; trips still run in rainA full refund, or a move to another departure if there is space
Glacier Helicopters, scenic flightsA final weather call after check-in at its office; check in 30 minutes beforeAnother date or a full refund; a prepaid voucher is accepted at any of its bases for a flight of similar length and price
The Helicopter Line, scenic flightsWeather check at check-in, 30 minutes before departureThe voucher is accepted at any of its bases for a similar flight; a full refund if you cannot reschedule

No operator, and no official body, publishes how often the flights are grounded, so treat any figure you read for that with caution. The practical answer is to give yourself more than one chance: book the first full day you are in the area, so the second and third are there if the first is grounded, and keep the free walks or Lake Matheson for the day that does not fly.

Your own cancellation

The heli-hike and the scenic flights on this page can be cancelled up to 24 hours before for a full refund; inside 24 hours there is no refund for a change of mind. So if the forecast looks hopeless, decide the day before. The call on the morning itself is the operator’s, and a trip it cancels for weather is refunded.

The best time of year

The glaciers can be visited at any time of year, and the heli-hike runs at 8:50 am and 11:50 am year round. DOC calls November to April the busy summer season on the Lake Matheson walk, and it is also when the days are longest; but DOC’s heavy rain can come in any month, so no season is reliably settled.

How cold is it on the ice

The temperature on the glacier is anywhere from 0 to 25 °C: warm work on a sunny day, close to freezing in cloud or wind. Dress in layers you can take off. Fox Glacier Guiding asks for three or four warm upper-body layers, quick-drying trousers rather than jeans, sunglasses and sunscreen, and supplies boots, socks, crampons, poles and waterproofs. On a scenic flight you are on the snow for 8 to 10 minutes: a warm jacket and closed shoes are enough.

Where to read the forecast

DOC links NIWA’s forecast for Westland Tai Poutini National Park from its glacier walk pages, and the national park visitor centre in Franz Josef issues a daily glacier access update with the status of the valley walks. For the drive in, note that slips closed the Haast Pass road between Makarora and Lake Hāwea from 28 August 2026; NZTA reopened it fully on 23 October, with a 50 km/h limit at Waterfall Slip and stop/go at Windy Point while recovery work continues: check the Journey Planner before you drive it.
