Lake Matheson
The Lake Matheson walk near Fox Glacier: the 4.4 km loop, when the mountains reflect in the water, getting there from the village, and the guided evening walk.
Lake Matheson, Te Ara Kairaumati, is the lake near Fox Glacier where Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman mirror in still water. The Department of Conservation’s (DOC) circuit is a 4.4 km loop, about 1 hour 30 minutes, from a free car park 5.0 km by road west of Fox Glacier village; the reflections are best at dawn and dusk on a windless day. Glacier Valley Eco Tours walks it with a guide in the early evening: Franz Josef: Half-Day Nature Tour to Lake Matheson, from US$68 a person (checked November 2026).
The calendar above is Glacier Valley Eco Tours’ guided Lake Matheson walk, with 18 reviews (checked November 2026).
The circuit, stop by stop

DOC’s walk goes round the lake from the car park through forest, on a well-formed track with bridges and boardwalks:
| Stop | From the previous one |
|---|---|
| Jetty Lookout | 2.4 km return from the car park, 45 minutes, wheelchair accessible |
| View of Views Lookout | 15 minutes through forest |
| Reflection Island | 5 minutes |
| Back at the car park | 35 minutes |
The whole loop is 4.4 km, about 1 hour 30 minutes. If you only have time for one stretch, the wheelchair-accessible section to the Jetty Lookout and back is the shortest walk to the water. The Lake Gault Track branches off the circuit for a longer walk: 8 km return, about 3 hours, climbing about 200 m to a lookout over the Southern Alps.
When the mountains reflect
The water is dark, coloured by organic matter from the forest floor, which is what turns it into a mirror. DOC’s advice is a sunny, windless day, and dawn or dusk, when the lake is stillest. The peaks in the reflection are Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain at 3,724 m, and Mount Tasman, Te Horokōau, at 3,497 m. Cloud on the Southern Alps hides them however still the water is, so keep the walk for a clear evening if your stay allows it. The walk is busy from November to April.

Getting there
From Fox Glacier village follow Cook Flat Road west; after about 5 km the signposted road on the right leads to the car park, 5.0 km by road in all, about 5 minutes. Parking is free for cars and campervans, with three mobility spaces, and no booking is needed. There are toilets at the car park but no drinking water, so bring your own. No boats, kayaks or drones are allowed on the lake.
With a guide, or on your own
On your own the walk costs nothing. The guided walk adds the transport, a guide on the forest and the reflections, a tea break and rain gear, and it runs rain or shine; Glacier Valley Eco Tours picks up in Fox Glacier or drives from its base in Franz Josef, about 30 minutes away.
